'Reform' is the bracing solo debut of industrial architecture from Chicago's Jonathan Krohn aka Stave. An "exercise in precision and spatialisation" according to his label, Flingco Sound, it's a compelling piece of work making deep incursions to the barbed wire-strewn post-rave warehouse zones of Raime, Cut Hands or Vatican Shadow, but with a uniquely cavernous, bunkered sound design strategy and defence mechanism he can safely call his own. Seven tracks lead thru a series of annexed antechambers with individual reverb settings, from Alberich-like engine room churn and burn on 'The Fear' to the depth gauging steppers ricochets of 'Stave' and the intensely claustrophobic battery of 'Tower9', following into the pendulous clangour of 'Gun Control' and the gargantuan, disused power station ambience of 'Disc1' and the air-raid corridor pings and encroaching footsteps of 'Minus3'. Heard on headphones it's an inarguably impressive feat of sound design dynamics, simulating the deserted multi-storey carpark of your nightmares, and we can only imagine how heavy it'll sound with proper amplitude. Strong recommendation.
